Compact, box-type and containerised substations
A prefabricated substation puts medium-voltage switching, the transformer and low-voltage distribution inside one factory-built, type-tested enclosure. The civil work on site reduces to a foundation and a cable trench, and the whole unit is routine-tested before it leaves Shanghai. MARS builds European-style (YB) units with separate MV, transformer and LV compartments, American-style pad-mounted packages with the transformer tank as the structural body, and 20 ft / 40 ft containerised substations for solar, wind and energy-storage step-up duty.
Typical configurations
- Incoming: 10, 11, 12, 20, 22, 33 or 35 kV; SF6 or solid-insulated ring main unit, or air-insulated metal-clad panel where extension is expected.
- Transformer: oil-immersed (S11/S13, hermetically sealed) or cast-resin dry-type (SCB), 100–2,500 kVA in one enclosure, larger in containers.
- Outgoing: 400/415/480 V IEC 61439 low-voltage board with metering, capacitor compensation and up to 12 feeders.
- Enclosure: galvanised steel, stainless or GRP; IP33 to IP54; enclosure class per IEC 62271-202; forced ventilation and anti-condensation heaters for tropical and coastal sites.

FAQ: Transformer Substations
What is the difference between a European and an American box-type substation?
A European (YB-type) substation has three separate compartments — MV switchgear, transformer and LV board — in one enclosure, and is serviced from the outside through doors. An American pad-mounted package uses the transformer tank itself as the body with the MV and LV terminations in a front compartment; it is smaller and cheaper but has less switching and LV distribution capacity.
What capacity can a compact substation house?
Single-enclosure units are typically 100 to 2,500 kVA. Above that MARS supplies containerised substations in 20 ft or 40 ft ISO frames, commonly used as 3–6 MVA step-up stations for solar, wind and battery storage plants.
How is the transformer loading affected by the enclosure?
IEC 62271-202 defines enclosure classes (5K, 10K, 15K, 20K, 25K, 30K) by the extra temperature rise the enclosure causes. A transformer in a 20K enclosure must be de-rated or ventilated compared with open air. MARS sizes ventilation from the transformer losses at the design ambient and states the enclosure class on the nameplate.
What do you need to quote a substation?
The single-line diagram or intended incoming/outgoing arrangement, incoming voltage and fault level, transformer kVA and vector group, LV voltage and feeder schedule, site ambient, altitude, IP and corrosion class, and the destination. A site photo or plan helps with cable entry.
